Sylt - Germany
Another city not to far from Hamburg. I took the 7am train and it took me a little less than 4 hours to reach the Westerland beach on Sylt. Sylt is an island in the north of Germany connected by a tiny bit of land to the mainland. The train drives you over all the way. I took the time in the train to have my self prepared breakfast and listen to some podcasts.
From the station I walked through the town and it was weird to look at. You’ll find fancy stores, tourist stores, restaurants and cafes and the matching rich guys in Germany, paired with punk rock music and homeless punks on the streets 😄 I don’t know if this is still a trend, but in Germany for 3 months in the summer of 2022 we got a 1 Euro a month ticket for all the regional trains Germany wide. It was a try to let people start travelling in Germany again and boost the economy after Corona with it. The punks, mostly out of big cities like Berlin, decided to use the ticked and crash the rich areas of Germany like Sylt. I have never been to the island before, as it is quite posh. It surely is, the restaurants and cafes at the beach are more expensive than in other north or baltic sea cities and the people at the beach look like they care a lot about how they look to others. The punks didn’t go to the beach as there is an entrance fee to make sure the beaches are taken care of. I liked the way the beach looks. It is all clean and there a smooth an nice waves. But the rest, honestly, not that I couldn’t afford to stay there, but I prefer normal people 😄 So would I visit again? Maybe for a day trip or to different parts on the island, but not for a whole vacation for sure. There are nicer parts on the German coast for me. Sorry if I offend some Sylt fans, but that is just my opinion 😉
The “Ladder to Heaven” takes you up the damm to overlook the beach.
You need to walk a few stepps though 😉
It is worth the view though.
